Bovine Portrait #339900
oil on canvas, 2010, 12 x 12 inches, $950

EDIE NADELHAFT
Artist Statement :: September 2010, AAF-NYC

The paintings and sculpture in this exhibit are representative of three distinct bodies of work.

The Cherry Biters are greatly magnified, highly detailed oil paintings of myself biting into a cherry. The perspective ranges from close to extreme close-up, culminating in a focal point narrow enough to exclude all contextual and biographical information. The biter is captured mid-chomp, teeth tearing at the fleshy fruit, suspended in a macabre state of pre-demolition. The cherry, half-chewed is often unidentifiable. Lusciously rendered in vivid hues, the pictures are decadent, and unabashedly sexual, but the subject is something more inclusive than lust. It is, rather, the totality of sensual pleasures involved in the experience: the visceral satisfaction of crushing the thing in one’s teeth, the burst of flavor, the succulent juice and finally, the satiation of hunger.

The Bovine Portraits in Hexadecimal Hue are a series of monochromatic oil paintings of cows. The work explores themes of existentialism, portraiture and the impact of the digital on visual experience. Each picture begins with a photograph that is digitally manipulated to produce a monochromatic "head shot", the hue for which is chosen from the 216 colors of the basic Web palette. The facial “expressions” implied by the anatomical idiosyncrasies of these subjects evoke a wide range of human emotions: the heavy brooding brow and steady gaze inspire touching associations of fear, innocence, anger, and vulnerability; large eyes and long lashes are at once charming and disconcerting. But the body of work as a whole is intended to be humorous as well-a little joke about the history of portraiture, which is largely a tale of the very rich immortalized in self-important displays of wealth and power. In creating these works, I have elevated cattle, a traditional symbol of said wealth, to that same stature.

The pills, like the actual drugs that inspired their design, are pretty, shiny things to chase away your blues or blahs. Inscribed with SMS shorthand, these pieces are a light-hearted send up of viral marketing and our culture's enduring love affair with the quick fix and snappy comebacks.

Edie Nadelhaft is a native of Pittsburgh, PA.  She studied painting and art history at S.U.N.Y. at Purchase and received her BFA, with honors, from the Massachusetts College of Art in 1995.  Since 1997, she has lived and worked on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Her paintings and sculpture have been widely exhibited throughout the United States with solo shows at Kumukumu Gallery and Dance New Amsterdam in NYC, and the Affordable Art Fair NYC in September 2010. In 2008, Ms. Nadelhaft was awarded the Platte Clove Artist in Residence Grant by the Catskill Center for Conservation and Development. In her spare time, she enjoys riding her motorcycle and bad cop shows.

festival information
Manhattan Theatre Source’s Estrogenius Festival, an annual celebration of female voices, is one of New York City’s largest women’s arts festivals.

Founded by Fiona Jones in 2000, the festival debuted with a program of 10 short plays and music. Since then, it has grown into a five-week event including short plays, solo shows, music, visual art, dance, teen performances and support for African girls’ education.

Completely volunteer run, the Estrogenius Festival has provided more than 1,600 artists the chance to shine; showcased award-winning playwrights Sheila Callaghan, Quiara Alegria Hudes, T.D. Mitchell and Melissa Maxwell; presented Bessie Award-winning choreographers Marta Renzi and Jennifer Nugent; and provided scholarships for girls to attend school in Niger, ranked the poorest country in the world by the United Nations.

We take open submissions from around the world and are committed to providing opportunities to female artists - in a variety of disciplines - ranging from the emerging to the seasoned professional.

The New York Times raves that Estrogenius
“lives up to its billing as a celebration of women’s work.”

MELISSA RIKER
Melissa Riker has been curating and producing Women in Motion since the inception of Estrogenius.

That would be (*cough*) 11 years now....

Surprisingly, Women in Motion is the only dance series in New York City dedicated to the voices of female choreographers.

Each year, the series aims to place the work of both emerging and established female artists on stage in a supportive and development-friendly environment.

Exactly how the choreographers' work is showcased has changed and grown over the years, from a simple showcase format in the cozy Theatre Source brick-box, to dance studios in Manhattan and finally in 2010, to a full process based performance.

Thanks to a full team of WiM producers for 2010, Women in Motion:INNER BEAST has commissioned choreographers with time in rehearsal, a development showing with feedback and a final fully produced performance at a major downtown dance venue, Joyce Soho on Oct 22 and 23rd, 2010.

Melissa would not be able build this one of a kind show every year without the help of Fiona Jones, Jen Thatcher and the Estrogenius team, Jessica Edkins (2008, 2009, 2010), Amber Sloan and Esther Palmer (2010).

JANET RESTINO
Janet Restino creates with her heart, hands and head in many media. She is intuitive, instinctual, sometimes impulsive.

Piano was her first love, she later took on many more loves – sculpture, drawing, painting and photography. Nature is always calling the shots.

She is now trying her hand at video and comedy. And she’s always been writing and sometimes performs as a singer/songwriter/poet Off Off Broadway.  She likes to co-mingle media. Her poetry and lyrics also find their way into her images – especially the ink drawings of nudes – adding a literary component that takes sensual visuals to the cerebral plane.

Restino is steeped in visual history from cave drawings to cartoons, from Willendorfs to windmills, frescos to fig leafs and fractals, papyrus to Polaroids to pixels.

Coming to NYC in the 80’s from Philadelphia, she “bopped around” various neighborhoods in the East and West Village and Brooklyn until settling in Hells Kitchen in the early 90’s.

Formally trained as a sculptor, she studied classically and with a master of Abstract Expressionism, she wants her two dimensional work to jump off the wall.
Her renewed interest in making small figurative bronzes celebrating the feminine spirit is timely.

She exhibits primarily in New York, in Solo, Group Shows and Arts Events.
Her clients and collectors include many well-known cultural organizations and performers in the Arts, Entertainment and Theater.

“I’m not much different than a bee making honey, a spider spinning a web. I mine the psyche and the spirit to make art.  I’m just a vessel at times – keeping myself in tune to participate in the act of creation which feels truly divine.” – Janet Restino

HEIDI RUSSELL
Russell is a self-taught fine art photographer who specializes in capturing the intersection of languages and dimensions through full-frame, non-manipulated imagery of cultural environs.  She is a native of Oxford, New York, and is currently based in New York City.

Since receiving her first camera at the age of 6, Russell has been impassioned by sharing her discoveries of daily life through photography.  As a Rotary Youth Exchange Student to Denmark at the age of 18 she had her first opportunity to see another country and culture through the lens.  She has been capturing the intricacies and the spirit of the cultural environs she explores worldwide ever since.

After graduating from Cornell University in 1988, she worked in the fields of advertising, business and human resource management, and fundraising, working at both Syracuse and Cornell Universities.  She was a board member of the Community School of Music and Arts and the President of the Ithaca-Cayuga Rotary Club while living in Ithaca, New York.

In 2004, Russell changed her career path to follow her passions in photography and international cultural exchange.  She studied at the Cornell University-in-Rome Program during summer 2004 and spent the fall semester with the Hellenic International Studies in the Arts, a small art school on the island of Paros in Greece.

After delving into being creative full-time in Europe, she moved to NYC in 2005 to continue to pursue her passions.  Since 2005, her work has been in solo and group exhibitions internationally, including her first solo exhibition held in May 2007 at NY Studio Gallery in NYC.  In 2006, she was chosen to participate in the Hungarian Multicultural Center’s Artist Residency in Budapest and was selected to exhibit work in the 8th International Festival of Artistic Photography held in Athens, Greece.  Russell was invited in April 2007 to sit on the Board of Directors for Hungarian Multicultural Center.  During the summer of 2009, she participated in a three-week certificate program held in Berlin through Transart Institute.  Since 2005 she has volunteered for Cuchifritos, a community not-for-profit gallery project of Artists Alliance, Inc., located on the Lower East Side, and supports community-building-support projects with her photography and time.

Russell also holds curatorial positions with Manhattan Theatre Source in NYC and the e-zine, The New York Optimist.  In 2008, Russell founded the cross-disciplinary, International Women Artists’ Salon.

Russell is also spreading the wings of her creative outreach by establishing an indie publishing company that combines her passions, with the mission to publish works that utilize Art as a bridge for Cultural Understanding.

Ms. Russell invites you to follow her passions and projects through www.heidirussell.com, Facebook, LinkedIn

CAREN JO SHAPIRO
Grappling with issues of abuse, gender, femininity, masculinity, and sexuality my paintings confront the overly consumed, idealized and oppressive values inherent in society.  Through psychological, expressionist portrayals of ‘real’ human beings, my work exposes the impact of, and adaptations to a society which frequently denies the oppression and abuse inherent within it.

Defined by expressive, broad strokes of unapologetic color, the subjects of my work demand that the covert truths behind their existence be laid bare. Grappling with emotional and physical survival, conveyed through scale, color, brushstroke and occasionally text, are flawed yet remarkable individuals.

In addition to painting I am a licensed psychotherapist, who provides counseling services on the Lower East Side primarily to women and members of the LGBT community.

HELENE GALEK
Ms. Galek is happily assisting the great Jen Thatcher for the 3rd year in a row! She has previously performed in 5 Estro festivals too and will play the cheerful British Aunt in “The Open Door”, for Week Two of this year’s Estro Fest!

Helene just finished her assistant producer duties for Week One of Estro and what a grand week it was! She is happily working again with director Kathleen O’Neill, having performed under her helm in Boo-Art’s premiere production of “House of Bernarda Alba.”  She is equally pleased to be acting with Richard Kent Green, who assisted her many years ago in returning to the biz. Helene recently co-starred and co-produced the much talked about production of “Jen and Liz in Love” in this year’s Fringe Festival, under her own company, BlondeBrunetteRedhead Productions (bbr). Helene has played a plethora of characters in many a Spontaneous Combustion (the 48hr short play festival) happening at MTS! She is also on the advisory board of Boo-Arts and is Casting Director at Manhattantheatresource,
Sistahs are doin’ it for themselves!

Happy 11th anniversary to all the wonderful, powerful and magical women out there! --Helene

Zofia Bogusz, a story...
The Atlantic Ocean floats perfectly between NYC and Poland. The trip I took across it as a kid, has fueled my interest in people's lives and identities. That is what my art is about. It is a collection of places visited and places to be, real or symbolic. Water and war are recurring themes that portray an experience of both disturbance and serenity. The realistic human subjects in my work make a focal connection to our common world. Graphite and wood give me control in making them refined and raw. Their environment, whether its social or natural, does not necessarily follow physical rules of space, creating a surreal free floating narrative, much like our memories. Color, oil paint, and the form of the surfaces support and enhance the atmosphere. In my work there is a strive for balance, and acceptance of the various dualities in our lives.

Heirloom
Antique lace and vintage damask patterns penetrate building material to create a domestic sculpture. Meticulously carved, intricate pattern compromise the integrity of the structure; deterioration and organically growing highlighted fractures. Abstract familiarity create an unfolding story with reminents of a nostalgic past.

This piece would not have been possible without the help of so many. Special thank you to Jonathan Checler and Simon Kahn, I so appreciate your wisdom, support, and help throughout this project.

Member Spotlight: Colleen Healy

International Women Artists’ Salon is thrilled to announce member Colleen Healy’s second New York City solo exhibition of her photographic work…

New Mythologies
Colleen Healy

21 September –21 November 2010

OPENING RECEPTION: THURSDAY, 23 SEPTEMBER 2010
7 – 9pm

Lolita Bar
266 Broome Street
New York, NY 10002
212.966.7223
www.lolitabar.net
HOURS: 5pm – 4am

This exhibition showcases selections from two ongoing series: Gorgon and Maiden Mother Crone. Gorgon is more confrontational; entirely made up of self-portraits and exploring the subjective nature of the gaze. Maiden Mother Crone mixes images of women of different ages to examine the inherent changes of living.  Both series build on mythology, archetypes, and the Symbolist, Surrealist, Expressionist artistic movements.  Jungian psychoanalysis locates both gorgons and the maiden, mother, crone trinity as archetypes. Gorgons serve as symbols of dangerous female sexuality while the trinity of the three ages of women represent transformations undergone in a lifetime.  The Symbolist, Surrealist, and Expressionist movements illustrated psychoanalytical ideas with female forms.  In a more contemporary context, decades of feminism combined with the postmodern movement highlight the importance of the individual, often expressed through portraiture.

My photographs, made with multiple exposures on 4 x 5 sheet film and the use of solarization and experimental toning mix portraiture with figure study. The subject matter is women, young, old, and in between. They confront the viewer with the female form as actor rather than spectacle. Women of different ages, superimposed over one another, challenge standard ideals of beauty. By presenting parts of different women, I insist upon recognition of these parts as valuable to the whole. The processes I choose enhance the variability in photographic techniques and challenge any assumption that this medium is a direct reflection of reality. I approach an inner reality by overlapping abstraction and representation. The eerie reversals and understated colors of my darkroom processes enhance the juxtaposition of different female forms for a visceral evocation of archetypes. The overlay of compelling body parts: perky breasts, slender limbs, alluring eyes and lips, with unattractive ones: wrinkles, bony knees, nostrils, tricks the viewer into admiring a beautiful shape that resolves into a characteristic rarely considered appealing. With form and color I confound the perception of subject and background in order to defy ideas about women’s bodies that attract or repel.

Colleen Healy Bio
The fine art potentials of photography have always fascinated me. This medium crosses all boundaries from news to snapshots as it defines the way in which we look at the world. I am interested in exploring different ways to challenge the straight forward photographic image which places the world in a box.

I graduated the MFA program at the Hartford Art School University of Hartford after building on my undergraduate training at University of Delaware with photofinishing and alternative photographic processes such as cyanotype and gum bichromate in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I moved to New York City to further pursue the fine art aspects of photography.

Member Spotlight: Orietta Crispino, "Three Sisters Come and Go"

THREE SISTERS COME AND GO has an international pedigree; director Orietta Crispino and dramaturg Marco Casazza met over 25 years ago when he was her student at the Piccolo Teatro in Milan.  While in Italy, Crispino assisted some of the country's finest directors, including Giorgio Strehler and Massimo Castri.  She has lived and worked in New York City for the past decade while Casazza continues to work in Italy.

Set between the apparently opposite poles of Chekhov and Beckett, THREE SISTERS COME AND GO follows the lives of the three archetypical Chekhovian women and their desire to reconstitute their lives beyond their sense of profound loss. Bound to living together, each of the sisters is comically obsessed with being the most unhappy of the group.

Performances run September 29th through October 10th at Theaterlab (137 West 14th St., between 6th and 7th Ave.).

Performances are Wednesday through Saturday at 8pm, Sunday at 3pm with an additional performance Sunday, October 3rd at 7pm.  There is no performance on Thursday, October 1st.  Press dates are September 29th and October 2nd at 8pm and Sunday, October 3rd at 3pm and 7pm.

At the end of a long hot season, we bring you Summer Winds, a dance event, curated and produced by Rani Welch, founder and Art Director of The Rover SoHo, a brand new gallery/performance venue with a vision to stretch your artistic arm, as well as your imagination. Outside out-of-the-box, rooftop ordinary to fantastical, lush, dynamic and polished indoors, highlighting the work of Diane Tomasi, Kelley Donovan, Rani Welch and Jessica Taylor, Summer Winds is a breath of fresh air with four on-the-verge female choreographers.

Summer Winds is the first event at The Rover to begin outside on the cobblestones of old Wooster Street with site specific work by Jessica Taylor accompanied by live Bass from Dane Markle-Klapp.  From there the show trickles inside and out onto The Rover rooftop for The World of Else with choreography and video installation created by Diane Tomasi. Premiering at the same venue, Saturday, September 25, and Sunday, September 26, 7pm, at 41 Wooster Street, Floor 2, New York.  Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the door (cash only) or for reservations visit www.brownpapertickets.com.

Culminating at the main stage, are Kelley Donovan and Dancers with Age of Unraveling, a new work exploring cycle of creation, destruction and rebuilding.  Jessica Taylor with Momentum, and Rani Welch/Tribe of Human with an excerpt from Light the Branches, a collaborative effort between Tribe of Human and The Batteries Duo (www.thebatteriesduo.com) to premiere September 18-19, 8pm at The Rover SoHo.  An excerpt from this work will be performed as a part of Summer Winds on September 25-26.

Jessica Taylor, originally hailing from St. Louis, received her BA in modern dance from Point Park University in Pittsburgh.  Choreography credits include the American College Dance Festival, the Amalgamate Artist Series, SUNY Purchase, Pittsburgh Playhouse Dance Company, and Squonk Opera, among others.  Currently she is a freelance choreographer and dances with Emily Faulkner and Dajhia Ingram Dance.

Diane Tomasi began Kusterflux, in 2008, and has shown work in various ‘underground’ venues in New York and Massachusetts.  Mainly places that weren’t dance spaces previously, such as The Brooklyn Barbell Club, Studio 43, and now The Rover Rooftop.  Kusterflux likes to play, the crazier the circumstances the better.

Rani Welch
