DIXON PLACE PERFORMANCE SERIES PRESENTS:
NAKED IN ALASKA: THE BEHIND-THE-SCENES TRUE STORY OF STRIPPING IN THE LAST FRONTIER.

ONE NIGHT ONLY! April 27th 10 pm.
161A Chrystie Street, New York.

VALERIE HAGER stars in her autobiographical story of an exotic dancer searching for redemption in strip clubs from Mexico to Alaska to California in NAKED IN ALASKA.

NAKED IN ALASKA premiered with a sold out house in the 7th Annual Women at Work Festival 2012 held at NYC’s Stage Left Studio. Laurie Lawson, Theatre Critic for Off-Broadway wrote, “Utilizing much humor and some very impressive pole dancing, the story unfolds as Valerie combines vulnerability and honesty with the survival skills needed to navigate the murky world of strip clubs and private party rooms…You will root for her indomitable spirit and celebrate the triumph of Valerie Hager in NAKED IN ALASKA.”

NAKED IN ALASKA was BEST SELLER in last years 13th Annual EstroGenius Festival 2012 held at TBG Theatre. And, most recently NAKED IN ALASKA was accepted into a New Works Series in Paris, France.

This 70-minute show uses a stripper pole, archival video, and rock hits to take the audience on one magical ride! A young woman on the verge of eviction. A best friend who offers an adventure she can’t refuse. A ten-year career that tests the limits of friendship and the will to survive. Naked In Alaska is the true story of Valerie Hager’s career as an exotic dancer in clubs from Mexico to Alaska to California. Told with live pole dancing and over a dozen characters who danced in and frequented these clubs, Naked In Alaska is a fearless look at the objects we make of ourselves to fit in and the buried truths we must face to have a chance at coming home.

Bio

Valerie Hager is a "not to be missed” (NoHo LA) actor, improviser, and movement artist. She’s appeared in Warner Brothers’ The Invention of Lying, Comedy Central’s Mind of Mencia, Discovery Channel’s Guilty or Innocent.
Her recent theatrical performances include Dracula at Symphony Space, The Ensemble Workshop at The LAByrinth Theatre, and a sold out run of Naked in Alaska. Valerie performs in Selected Shorts at Stage Left Studio, and The Room’s Salon Series, which she co-founded.

Naked In Alaska, has been accepted into Emerging Artists, Planet Connections, Women at Work, Estrogenius and Dixon Place. Naked in Alaska was recently invited to perform in Paris, France and The Acorn Theatre in Cornwall, Scotland.
Valerie studied acting with Ivana Chubbuck, Tony Greco, Karen Kohlhaas of Atlantic Theater Company, and Cinda Jackson. She is a graduate of the LAByrinth Theater Master Class.

Valerie studied improv at UCB, The PIT, and Second City.  She began performing as a child alongside her father, mime artist Jerry Hager, as his sidekick Punky the Clown. Her earliest training came from him in the form of mime. Later, she trained in mime under Rick Wamer at The School for Mime and Lorin Salm at Mime Theatre Studio.

I wrote Naked In Alaska because shame, self-esteem, and self-forgiveness have been themes throughout my life that came to a dramatic head during my time as an exotic dancer. Upon leaving exotic dancing and reflecting upon my experience, I saw this period of my life as a rich context through which to address issues that women struggle with in all walks of life: worthiness, friendship, loyalty, forgiveness, and finding a place in oneself and in the world to be whole. I saw Naked In Alaska as an opportunity not only to inform and demonstrate the courage to reveal my own truth but also to honor the experiences of so many other women and open a door for them to connect with their own truth.

Naked In Alaska is dedicated to the outcast, the forgotten one, and the star that shines inside each of us. I believe Naked In Alaska has been and can be a source of inspiration and hope for all those who’ve ever felt different, alone, or on the fringe, and long to be included.

I am passionate and proud of Naked In Alaska and feel it would be an incredible honor to share my story with you!

Peace Caravan Project by Marla Mossman

Mingsha Sand Dunes
Dunhuang, China

About:
Photographer and artist, Marla Mossman, and the Peace Caravan Project are traveling from Jerusalem, Israel to X’ian, China by car, foot, horse, mule and camel to document places of historical and religious significance. In the quest to explore the Silk Road's heritage and its spirituality and the connection to Buddhism, Taoism, Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism, and Islam, Mossman has already taken six expeditions to photograph China, India, Turkey, Afghanistan and the Middle Eastern countries of Syria, Jordan and Israel.

Mossman’s photos capture the people along the journey in their daily lives and remind us that even though we have differences, we share similar loves, hopes and dreams. Her writings report the intimate moments she experiences with these people along the way. In her blog she shares graphic experiences, her soul-searching moments, sometime sleepless nights, and also the many joys she finds as she visits these historical places.

When the photographs are viewed as a collection, on the website, in the photography books, videos, and on display in the exhibitions and at the lectures; the Peace Caravan endeavors to inform and inspire others to achieve understanding, respect, and acceptance. This twenty first Century caravan traveling along the Silk Road, provides a network of individuals exchanging ideas, cultures, and traditions as they have for over 2,500 years.

Bio

Marla Mossman is an international artist and photographer who has traveled extensively documenting the human condition.
Interested in arts and education she began her Peace Caravan Project in 1996 traveling solo from Israel to China along the ancient Silk Road.
Mossman’s photographs of people’s traditions and culture help us see that we share similar loves, hopes and dreams.

Artist Statement

I walk on the same paths as the great Sages, Prophets, and Saints.
I am a woman traveling alone.
I am on a journey of religious, cultural, and inner discovery to find answers;

“Why is mankind still at war?”

In the media today, there are many images showing violence and hate. With my Peace Caravan project,
I visit the places where beliefs originated and the ancient Silk Road captured my imagination to walk with the locals and
document with video and photography the people who reside in the shadow of the religious and historical ruins that remain there today.

More than a conduit through which early civilizations exchanged goods and materials, ideas were also shared, influencing our fundamental religions.
From the vast deserts of the Fertile Crescent in the Middle East, to the Taklamakan and Gobi Deserts in China,
these intertwining trade routes are known collectively as the Silk Road.

More InfoThe Peace Caravan's mission is to inform and inspire others to achieve understanding, respect and acceptance. By photographing the wonderful religious and cultural heritage of the Silk Road nations, by nourishing international cooperation, the exchange of cultural values and the equality of all people, including women and children, a new appreciation and a new way to peace will reveal itself.

www.steeplechasecoffee.com

About

This show is called SAND & SKY because it is a collection of paintings of Arizona desert scenes. These are images that I saw, some I photographed, some are from memory, some are pleine-aire studies. I participated in an artist residency at the Petrified Forest National Park and have taken several road trips out there. I have a deep love of Arizona and the great west.

For many years I have enjoyed working in various diverse media including film, video, welding, collage, found-object assemblage, and light sculpture. But I will always return to my first love of drawing and painting. Growing up, my father was a plein-aire landscape painter who loved barns and fields and water scenes. He studied with the reputable landscape painter Wolf Kahn. Occasionally he took me with him on his painting excursions. He passed away when I was eighteen. Now, almost thirty years later, I am following in his brushstrokes and embracing a love of landscape painting...even using some of the very same brushes he used.

Bio
Cornelia Jensen received her MFA from California College of the Arts in 2008. From 1988 to 1991 Jensen attended the graduate program in Film/Video Performance at the formerly named California College of Arts and Crafts. In 1987, she received a BA in Philosophy from Haverford College. In 1986 she studied at the Syracuse University Studio Art Program in Florence, Italy. She graduated with honors in Art from The Masters School in 1983 and received the Linda Wyatt Chissell Art Award. Jensen has curated numerous exhibitions in New York and San Francisco and has exhibited her work in the United States, Europe and Asia. In San Francisco, Jensen was a resident artist at the Lola Gallery, which she also helped create. She also designed and created the art and film venue called The Werepad, where she produced independent films and multi-media events. In 2011 Jensen attended an artist residency at the Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona where she followed in her father's footsteps and pursued landscape painting, which is now one of her main forms of expression. Jensen also creates found-object assemblage and recycled Styrofoam light sculpture. Jensen currently lives and works in Brooklyn as a painter and lighting designer.

Artist Statement
Jensen's landscape paintings portrays natural vistas so far removed from urban life that the scenes have become mythical. Her work addresses the presence and absence of nature in our environment and a personal concern with the existence and lifespan of our natural environment…what it offers, what it requires…how it suffers or wins.
